“Mystery School: Live from the Wasteland” was a collaboration between Twitch Studios and Mystery School, the creative project of Tony Reed Jr. and Owen Bones. The Mystery School stream is a unique and innovative nightly Twitch show in which Tony and Owen entertain viewers by reading and reacting to bizarre news & pop culture, as well as create original music live, incorporating the audience’s ideas and input, often to hilarious results.
Twitch partnered with Mystery School on this project as part of an evolving exploration into collaborating with endemic creators to level up, expand, and experiment with their content. I worked closely with Tony and Owen to create a unique live event in which the audience decided the structure of the show. Through chat and live polls, viewers decided the segments and activities, and even influenced the live music making.
We also wanted to explore cross pollinating the existing Mystery School audience with the broader Twitch audience of “enthusiastic gamers”. We invited rapper and producer DoseOne to share Devolver Digital’s latest release, Sludge Life, and share his process of creating the music and sound design for the game. Owen then created an original beat using sound effects from the game that the audience choose, while Tony and Dose did a live freestyle, reacting to the gameplay.
